Where to observe total solar eclipse 2008: Observation Spots
We would like to propose you a number of observation spots, excluding/ of course, the most ordinary option of observing from the point where you were when the eclipse began. Also other eclipse chasres discuss this problem on out forum (read it and add your ideas)
The Closest Spot
As you probably know, Novosibirsk lies on the central line of eclipse. More precisely, it’s one of its areas in vicinity of ‘Tolmachevo’ airport, which is only 17 km away from the city center. Its expanse of plains suits well the purpose of observation.

The Coastline of the Ob Sea
The Ob Sea area exceeds 1000 square km. Due to the winds originated here the sky is almost always clear. The beaches nearby Novosibirsk and Akademgorodok will almost certainly be overcrowded, so it is advisable to choose more distant parts of the shoreline. For example, the south-eastern coast features small camps for tourists and resort hotels. Maybe, you will even want to stay there fulltime during your visit to Novosibirsk.

Novosibirsk-Barnaul
The federal intercity highway M-52 connecting Novosibirsk and Barnaul almost entirely lies on the central line of eclipse. On the way, you’ll be able to stop at some villages and towns. You will also have an opportunity to contemplate at Salair Ridge, so the surroundings are quite picturesque. In the case of cloudiness, which is hardly to happen, you can just advance a liitle bit further down the highway and find a more clear spot.

Also read the section ‘Around Novosibirsk’, since there many interesting places near this highway.
To the North-West of Novosibirsk
A lot of open space sceneries can be found on the central line of eclipse to the north-west of Novosibirsk. Driving as far as 15 or 20 km away from the city, you will be able to find an appropriate spot. The nature here is the fusion of plains, lakes and moors.
